Welcome back to our annual interview with Maya.
With great relief, she announced this morning that she is finally, officially, a tween. My advice to her (and to myself) is hold on. She’s at that wonderful, complicated, exciting place between childhood and young adulthood. She can choose to hold on to the best bits of childhood as long as she wants. At the same time, she is gaining more independence, more responsibility, and more exposure to the crazy roller caster that is life. Hold on, my lovely girl, and know that everything changes or passes by the wayside or transforms into the next challenging, inspiring milestone before you can blink. Enjoy the best of it. Learn from the rest.
Here’s my girl in her own words:
- What are your favorite things to do?
Competitive clogging, taking care of our animals…. I love to swing on the tire swing, bake sweet stuff, read great books, and write.
- What do you like to eat?
I like to bananas, caramel, hot dogs, pizza, and anything sweet.
- What do you dislike eating?
I don’t like hot sauce or pop tarts or Backpacker’s Pantry Gumbo. I’ve always hated raisins and clementines, ugh.
4. What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up I would love to work for the National Humane Society, because people do too many cruel things to animals. And I’d also like to be a model, because I’d get to wear super cool wedge shoes and fancy dresses. And a singer. That’s it.
5. What will/did you do on your birthday?
I’m going to have a big slumber party with Grace, Mariah, Maddie, Jada, Sophia P, and Sophia S. It’s going to be so fun! My parents took me to the boundary waters for the first time, and I got to bring Scout.
6. What is your favorite color?
7. What thing to play with?
The computer! Just kidding. My pets.
8. What is your favorite thing to wear?
I like to wear wedge shoes and a long, sleeveless dress.
9. What is your favorite television show? Movie?
Jesse and Good Luck Charlie…. And my favorite movie is 13 Going on 30.
10. What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is the Heroes Guide to Storming the Castle and Inkheart (both of which she is currently reading).
11. What is your favorite song?
“Nah, nah, Honey I’m Good” and “Style” by Taylor Swift and “Fight Song” and KE$HA too.
12. What is the best thing someone could give you?
I would love it if someone gave me an Appaloosa horse, a Frisian horse, a bunch of multicolored barn cats, and a mansion with maids because I don’t want to clean it. Or a bunch of vacuum cleaner robots.
13. If you could go anywhere in the world to visit, where would you go?
Hawaii, because it’s always warm, or Texas, because it’s a Western place with horses.
14. What is one new thing you would like to try this year?
That’s tough. I’d like to do more horseback riding, learn how to sell stuff – so entrepreneurship, and how to write a big chapter book novel.
15. Finish the sentence, “the most important thing about Maya is…”
I’m awesome! (arms raised in a V). And I like animals and I can clog.
But, according to her mother, the most important thing about Maya is her curiosity, her passion for justice, and enthusiasm. Cheers to holding on for the wild ride of another year!
